REGREENING PARIS ROAD: SDT WASTE AND DEBRIS PLANTS
CYPRESS TREES AS PART OF ST. BERNARD PARISH PRESIDENT’S
BEAUTIFICATION PROGRAM
SDT Waste and Debris planted 40 Bald Cypress trees on
the neutral ground of Paris Road in Chalmette this week as part of
St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro’s beautification program
for business corridors.
Paris Road is one of the most traveled thoroughfares
in St. Bernard Parish and the tree planting effort will restore
trees to an area that has suffered from saltwater intrusion.
The project is one of the first donations to
Taffaro’s effort to facilitate business partnerships for a
beautification program on parish commercial corridors. The trees
will be planted along 1,000 feet of the median and will cost about
$25,000.
In his 100-day Recovery and Growth Plan, Taffaro
stressed his goals to create “a comprehensive effort to link the
Economic Development Commission, St. Bernard Department of Tourism,
and the parish administration with potential business partners” for
the betterment of the parish.
“We are pleased to jumpstart our corridor
beautification program with SDT’s contribution to the start of
beautifying the Paris Road corridor,” Taffaro said. “We will
continue to develop partnerships with our businesses along the Paris
Road, Judge Perez Drive and St. Bernard Highway corridors to enhance
the parish’s cleanliness and landscape.”
Sidney D. Torres, IV, president of SDT Waste and
Debris Services, whose grandfather Sam Randazzo literally planted
the breathtaking tunnel of trees now known by all as the Docville
Oaks on St. Bernard Highway in Meraux, said he wanted to do the same
for his community.
"Paris Road has been without our beautiful trees for
too long and SDT is proud to bring back them back,” Torres said.
“SDT will plant these cypress, which are native to the area and will
make a big improvement in the area’s landscaping. We are delighted
to make this contribution beyond picking up trash in St. Bernard. It
is the first of many landscaping projects we plan to do in St.
Bernard and the communities we serve.”
“As a kid, driving through the tunnel of trees in
Meraux, I remember the warm feeling I got,” Torres said. “I wanted
to create that same feeling of creating a tunnel.” Although the
first trees are planted on the median, he later plans subsequent
plantings on either side of the highway.
Torres said he also plans to pay for a sign welcoming
visitors, and he will be planting some Majule Palms near the De La
Ronde ruins on St. Bernard Highway at the Paris Road intersection
with directional signs there.
Torres, who is on the board for Keep Louisiana
Beautiful, also is doing free street sweeping twice a week along
Paris Road from St. Bernard Highway to the parish line at Bayou
Bienvenue. In conjunction with this weekend’s “Zero Tolerance for
Litter!” by the group, he wanted to remind people to pick up litter
at their homes and businesses. As required by law, Torres said
people should remember to secure their trash loads in trucks so
construction and demolition debris won’t add to the litter problem.
