1944 SWING BAND ORCHESTRA A GOOD START FOR ART IN APRIL

Festival sees nice weather, good crowds; scholarship winners announced

About 2,000 visitors attended the 12th Annual Art in April Festival Friday and Saturday on the grounds of the St. Bernard Parish Courthouse in Chalmette where pleasant weather and good crowds made the event held inside and outside the courthouse a big hit.

This year’s theme, “St. Bernard, The Good Old Days,” began Friday night with the Fine Art Show in the courthouse lobby and an outdoor concert on the Main Stage featuring Leif Pedersen’s 1944 Big Band Orchestra. Rain only stopped the playing twice and a full two hours of music brought current and displaced St. Bernard residents to the dance floor under the oaks at the Courthouse.

St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro said improving on such community-oriented events is another important step in the parish’s recovery. The Parish Office of Tourism, which is funded by a grant, coordinated the event with a committee of volunteers led by Tourism Director Elizabeth “Gidget” McDougall.

On Saturday, visitors enjoyed music, food and craft vendors and visited the art show and sale in the lobby where local students’ art as well as works by the St. Bernard Art Guild members were on display. There also was a ready supply of children’s activities.

A highlight of the event was the awarding of scholarships to four Chalmette High School students: James Smith, Holly Boynes, Kori Godchaux and Brittney Roberts. The students each will receive $1,000 to further their education in the field of art.

The event is sponsored by St. Bernard Parish Government’s Office of Tourism, St. Bernard Parish Art Guild, St. Bernard Parish Schools and made possible through funding from the Louisiana Office of Culture, Recreation and Tourism.
