FORMER ST. BERNARD
COUNCIL CLERK BECOMES COUNCIL CHAIR
Polly Boudreaux
accepts post as interim At-Large Councilwoman
Former St. Bernard Parish Council Clerk Polly Boudreaux took the
interim At-Large East Council member post at the April 15 meeting in
place of Tony “Ricky” Melerine who resigned in March because of
health reasons.
Boudreaux, who lives in Meraux with her two children, is an
educator. The council appointed her to the at-large post for the
eastern district. As council clerk at the time Hurricane Katrina
hit, she lived on site at the government complex for more than a
year and was intimately involved in the immediate recovery efforts.
She has a bachelor’s of arts degree from Louisiana College in
Pineville and a master’s of educational administration degree from
the University of New Orleans.
Boudreaux was the coordinator of the initial volunteer build in 2003
for the St. Bernard Community Playground in Torres Park in Chalmette
as well as the recent rebuilding of the playground to repair damage
from Katrina and a recent arson fire.
She served as council clerk from December 2003 to November 2007.
Boudreaux, who retired as a middle school curriculum coordinator for
St. Bernard public schools when she became clerk, has returned to
the classroom. She is heavily involved in other community activities
including the Art in April Festival and Trick or Trunk at Nunez
Community College.
Melerine represented District E for eight years and ran for the
at-large post for the eastern district, last fall. A permanent
replacement will be elected during next fall’s elections. Boudreaux
cannot run for the permanent post.
