Former St. Bernard
Parish council member given plaque at retirement party
St. Bernard Parish Council members and officials presented Tony
“Ricky” Melerine with a plaque at a recent party on his retirement.
Melerine, citing
health reasons and the possibility of upcoming heart surgery,
resigned from the council effective March 31. Melerine along with
Councilman Kenny Henderson and Parish President Craig Taffaro were
are the only three council members who returned to elected parish
office who were present at the government complex when Hurricane
Katrina flooded the area with 20 feet of water and left officials
stranded for nearly two weeks.
Melerine, who represented District E that covers the eastern end of
the parish for eight years, ran for the at-large post for the
eastern district, last fall.
