RESIDENTS SHOULD TAKE
PRECAUTIONS FOR MOSQUITO SEASON
A few mosquito traps
test positive for West Nile in St. Bernard
St. Bernard
Parish recently received reports that out of more than 180 samples
taken from mosquito traps, only six locations showed positive
results for the West Nile Virus.
There are no
human cases, but Parish President Craig P. Taffaro Jr. wants
residents to take precautions. Residents should wear mosquito
repellant containing Deet or Picardin and wear long sleeves and
pants if they are going to be outside at dusk or in the early dawn
period when mosquitoes are most active.
David Rainey,
mosquito inspector, said the department is flying the parish
mosquito control aircraft as much as possible, including three times
last week. Parish officials use weekly results from test samples to
guide how they handle the spraying schedule.
Rainey said
residents should empty all water containers such as unused flower
pots or tires because they can breed mosquitoes. Residents also
should make sure screens and doors are closed or repaired to limit
exposure as well.
