REGIONAL LEADERS COME
TOGETHER IN PRAYER
Hundreds attend
prayer luncheon at Riverside Hilton
St.
Bernard Parish President Craig P. Taffaro, Jr. opened the Greater
New Orleans Region Prayer Luncheon with an original prayer for unity
and peace with New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, Jefferson Parish
President Aaron Broussard and other leaders by his side.
“We
pray that we will turn our differences to a mosaic of community;”
Taffaro said, “use our similarities as the glue that binds us
together; allow our strengths to assist those in need; humble
ourselves in our weaknesses; and let us be aware of the grandeur of
the works of our Creator and know our part of his plan for unity and
peace.”
Taffaro was the opening speaking at the start of a packed luncheon
May 2 where citizens from seven parishes heard their leaders pray
for unity and peace, for elected officials and public servants, for
business and economic development and for protection from hurricanes
and terrorism.
In
addition to Taffaro, Nagin and Broussard, the event in the Grand
Ballroom of the Hilton Riverside Hotel in New Orleans was hosted by
the other parish presidents in the region: St. Tammany President
Kevin Davis, St. Charles President V.J. St. Pierre Jr., St. John the
Baptist Parish President William Hubbard and Plaquemines Parish
President William Nungesser.
The
keynote speaker was George Schinn, the owner of the New Orleans
Hornets, who gave an inspirational address focused on his
rags-to-riches spiritual life that began with him losing his father
who died when he was 8 years old.
Schinn said his mother kept him with a positive focus on life by
constantly lifting him up, and he offered his recipe for that
success in life as well which includes goal setting and having faith
in yourself.
He
told the audience that he prayed after Hurricane Katrina about
moving the Hornets to Oklahoma City and he prayed when it was it was
time to return.
“We
prayed to do the right thing,“ Schinn said. “This community needs to
be lifted up and we have got to do that as a group of people. We
feel like we made the right decision to come back” as an
organization.
