Fire hydrants are painted to color codes that are mandated by National and Insurance Standards. The color of the top of the fire hydrant indicates the size of the water main and gallon per minute flow rate. This is very important to our firefighters when responding to structure fires. The Reflective Silver hydrant body allows firefighters to easily see the hydrants at night. The colors of the hydrant caps indicate valve locations underneath the hydrant. Overall, the Parish painted 2,213 hydrants and used 312 gallons of paint between May – August 2019.
Because of their role in the safety of our community, St. Bernard Parish Government asks that all residents in the future refrain from painting any portions of the fire hydrants. Those with questions regarding fire hydrants should call the Water and Sewer Department at 504-271-1681.
