The new $582,384.00 grant will help fund a continuous bikeway parallel to the Mississippi River from the Orleans Parish line to the Plaquemines Parish line.

This section, known as Phase IV, will extend from Valero Refinery west to Paris Road. Previous grants under this program, administered by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), have provided $2.2 million in funding for three earlier phases of the Mississippi River Trail from the Valero Refinery eastward to Braithwaite.

At the present time, DOTD is currently constructing a striped bicycle lane along St. Bernard Highway between Arabi and Paris Road as part of its roadway improvements. The new grant will pick up where this ends and construct a 10 ft. wide off-road multi-purpose trail for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, skaters and other non-motorized transportation users.

Engineering and permitting are expected to take up to three years with construction projected for 2021-22.

Parish President Guy McInnis said, “He was delighted the Parish had received this funding as it will allow residents to safely bike and walk along this corridor parallel to St. Bernard Highway while enjoying additional health and recreational benefits and scenic views of the river”.
