|ISLENO FIESTA 2012 TO BE HELD MARCH 17 AND 18|
Visitors to enjoy great food, music, crafts and living history demonstrations
Los Islenos Heritage and Cultural Society will celebrate its 36th annual Isleno Festival March 17–18, 2012 on the grounds of Los Islenos Museum Complex, 1345 – 1357 Bayou Road in St. Bernard Village. The Isleno Historic Village, situated in the rear of Los Islenos Museum, will once more be the setting for a series of living history demonstrations featuring folk crafts, historic vernacular lifestyles and the cultural identity of the Isleno descendants community in St. Bernard Parish. Representatives of the Houma Nation will prominently figure in Fiesta 2012, interpreting the history, culture and folk traditions of the Houma Tribe. Los Cabuqueros de Arucas, a well known traditional Canarian folk dance group and Los Cebolleros, a Canarian folk music group, both from Gran Canaria Island, will be featured cultural performers during Fiesta 2012.
Los Islenos Historic Village consists of seven structures. The Coconut Island Barroom, Estopinal House and Kitchen; Esteves House and Cresap-Caserta House are historic buildings which were relocated to the museum complex by Los Islenos Society. Each building and the surrounding grounds will be utilized for displays which will include farming, alligator hunting, trapping, boat building, trawl making, basket weaving, Teneriffe lace making and quilting. The Isleno Center will be the site of interpretive presentations discussing the Isleno cultural identity including folk remedies, historic farming and the history of the Houma Nation.
Los Cabuqueros de Arucas has a long and distinguished record of support in St. Bernard Parish. They first appeared in St. Bernard Parish during Fiesta 2005, several months prior to Hurricane Katrina devastating St. Bernard. Communications between Los Cabuqueros and Los Islenos in St. Bernard resumed in September 2005, just weeks following the hurricane. Los Cabuqueros sponsored a benefit concert for the restoration of Los Islenos Museum Complex in Gran Canaria in November 2005. The group has donated objects for the museum display in Los Islenos Museum, performed in St. Bernard Parish schools and served as an effective advocate for our recovery in the Canaries. Los Cabuqueros' record of sustained support of the Museum Complex's recovery from the Katrina catastrophe has been unsurpassed.
Los Cabuqueros and Los Cebolleros present a traditional repertoire of beautiful dances including the isa, folia, Canarian mazurka and polka. These groups perform regularly in festivals throughout Spain and continental Europe. Both groups work extensively to document the historic music, clothing and dance of the Canaries. Parish President David Peralta and Isleno Society President Lloyd "Wimpy" Serigne will officially open Fiesta 2012 Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 12 noon.
