On Saturday March, 14, 2009, the Law Offices of Marc R. Michaud will partner with the Community Center of St. Bernard to offer a free seminar on "Debt Collector Abuse and Harassment: Finally Free to Answer Your Phone." The seminar will begin at noon at the Community Center, located at 1107 LeBeau St in Arabi. The guest speaker will be Attorney Marc R. Michaud, who has extensive experience working with debt collection agencies. Before opening his solo law practice, Mr. Michaud represented some of the world's largest collection agencies, debt buyers and their affiliated financial services companies. According to Attorney Michaud, "Debt collectors are usually paid by commission. During difficult economic times like these, debt collectors are calling more and more people, and sometimes even abusing them, just to earn these commissions. It's very important that consumers understand their rights and know how to protect themselves from unfair and unscrupulous collection agents." Attorney Michaud's presentation will include an overview of the techniques collectors use to circumvent the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and other consumer protection laws. Participants will learn what their rights are and what to say when a debt collector calls them. They'll also find out what collectors legally can and cannot say or threaten them with. Notes Attorney Michaud, "After the session, participants will know how to take control of the situation and be aware of their legal rights under both federal and state law if debt collectors get out of line." The Debt Collector Abuse and Harassment seminar on March 14 is open to the public and no reservations are needed. For more information, please call the Law Offices of Marc R.
