Planning & Zoning Division

The Division of Planning and Zoning processes applications for zoning changes, zoning compliance letters, conditional uses, zoning variances, and new subdivisions. The Division also enforces the 2015 St. Bernard Parish Comprehensive Plan.

There are several major plans for St. Bernard Parish that describe future visions and guidelines to follow for development in the parish.

  • Planning Commission: The Planning commission consist of 7 members, 1 for each council district, 2 at Large. They are a recommendation body to hear all planning related reports. The planning commission provides recommendations to St. Bernard Parish Council on subdivision and zoning related activities.
  • Board of Zoning Adjustments: The BZA consist of 5 members and they issue variances and hear appeals on anything in Chapter 22 (Zoning Code). This may include items such as: heights of fences or big sheds. These are minor issues that do not need to reach council level.
  • Old Arabi Historic Commission: The Old Arabi Historic Commission meetings are usually held at 6:00pm on the First and Third Tuesday of each month in the Council Chambers. Old Historic Arabi is the area from North Peters to the Parish Line. The Old Arabi Commission reviews topics that has an exterior change on a house, fence, signs, etc...If you want to build a fence, put up a new sign, complete a demolition, or new roof- it must be reviewed by this commission.
